SVMC is dedicated to improving the health of the population by delivering exceptional medical care and addressing the social determinants of health. Prior VISTAs developed and launched projects such as teen peer-to-peer videos, farm-to-patient program, healthy living photo contest, diabetes and COPD themed texting service, oral hygiene education, launch of an entrepreneurial hub, and many more. This VISTA site supervisor guides you to success as you create and lead programs addressing the opioid epidemic by building self-worth and resiliency in at-risk youth, expanding medication take-back and creating social frameworks for individuals in recovery. The service site is Bennington, a small town nestled in Vermont's idyllic Green Mountains. The region has ample outdoor recreation opportunities (skiing, hiking, kayaking, cycling, hunting, fishing, etc.), a vibrant arts scene (Mass MoCA, Clark Art, etc.), an eclectic music and theater scene (Old Castle Theater), and 5 colleges (Bennington College, Southern Vermont College, Williams College, etc.). However, the community is facing an opioid epidemic that is crippling the local economy. VISTAs can have tangible positive impact on lives in Bennington. Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) is a comprehensive, not-for-profit, rural health system serving more than 80,000 people in Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts. It includes a medical center with a 24-hour emergency department, surgery services, regional cancer center, and 20 primary care and specialty practices. SVMC's physicians and associate providers are members of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH) and several SVMC programs are co-managed by D-HH.
