Penn State Extension Beaver connects Penn State researchers, educators, and students with opportunities to collaborate with local organizations and apply their expertise to address community challenges. This internship, for an enthusiastic undergraduate student for the summer of 2019, is an exciting opportunity for a student interested in farm and food business management, food value-chain development, food justice, and relationship building through community engagement. The intern will work under the direction of Extension Educators to collaborate with community partners, sharpen their skill sets, gain experience in unique environments, and build their professional networks. It is imperative this person is capable and excited about a hard days work and values time in the field. Responsibilities: Under the direction of Extension Educators, interns will: explore and develop current and future opportunities for community collaboration, business development, and program impact, specifically: Work with entrepreneurship educators to further develop relationship with farmers in the areas of agricultural marketing and tourism; value-added production; production transition; farmers market sales and success. Work on a project connecting farmers to PA craft brewers strengthening agricultural production of crops grown for this industry and build the value chain of the craft beverage market. Develop a schedule of focus groups for craft beverage industry stakeholders. Participate in a Well-Connected Communities initiative to provide education to youth and adults in the areas of urban gardening, nutrition education, water conservation, and youth development. Develop several statewide themes and exhibits for health/community fairs for the 2019-2020 Master Health and Wellness Volunteer (MHWV) program. Assess the interests of Nutrition Education Advisors (NEAs) and design, implement, and evaluate a one to two hour continuing education program for the NEAs. Expectations: Currently enrolled student in Penn States College of Agricultural Science. Strong interest in agricultural entrepreneurship, community engagement, human health and nutrition; local, craft farm-related food production; and adult and youth agricultural education. Strong skills in multi-tasking and ability to be prepared to tackle any issues that may arise, as each day will typically be different with varying degrees of challenges. Must be punctual, reside in or prepared to reside in/around Beaver County, Western Pennsylvania. Duration: 10 Weeks (Monday, June 3, 2019 Friday, August 9, 2019) Payment - $15.00 per hour.
