Urban Improv is an interactive program for young people that uses structured improvisational theater workshops to strengthen social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and help students deal creatively with real-life challenges through dialogue and performance. In 1992, Urban Improv was created by Freelance Players, Inc. in collaboration with the Boston Public Schools as a response to Boston’s escalating violence. Directed to youth in historically underserved communities, the program was initially modeled on the Living Stage, a successful community outreach program of Washington D.C.’s Arena Theatre. Our Values: Creativity, Empathy, Respect, Cooperation, Empowered Self-Expression, Diversity & Inclusion, Positive Social Change POSITION OVERVIEW      Reporting to the Executive Director, the Artistic & Educational Director (AED) will be a key member of the organization’s leadership team helping to drive program strategy and growth as it begins its second quarter century of impact. The AED will be responsible for the artistic and educational direction of all Urban Improv programs including partnerships with Boston City Schools and numerous regional youth organizations and educational institutions. He/she/they will develop and lead the implementation of program curriculum and strategy to increase student impact, deepen school/organization partnerships, and recruit, support and retain talented actor/musician-educators; and collaborate with the Executive Director on overall organizational strategy. The Artistic & Education Director will be a key external face of Rehearsal for Life in the community.   This position requires passion for creative youth development, and deep knowledge of applied theatre, social and emotional learning skills, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice. The Artistic & Education Director will have experience working with a range of races/ethnicities and cultures and students in underserved urban communities. Staff Leadership ?       Manage program leadership team including two Associate Directors and Senior Program Manager (operations & evaluation) ?       Recruit, hire, orient and evaluate diverse and talented staff to implement quality programs in collaboration with program leadership team ?       Work with staff to build effective relationships with each other and their constituents ?       Model core organizational values in all settings   Artistic & Education Leadership ?       Drive artistic & educational vision for Urban Improv programs based on intersections between theatre-arts and the development of social emotional mindsets ?       Responsible for quality Urban Improv program delivery (during school and after-school) ?       Oversee program operations (including schedule, facility, staffing, research and evaluation) ?       Lead curriculum development and scaffold training for staff (professional development) ?       Conduct weekly team meetings with program leadership team ?       Partner with Executive Director in support of larger organizational goals   Partnerships & Community Relationships ?       Strengthen Rehearsal for Life’s advocacy in creative youth development sector ?       Manage and deepen program partnerships and community relationships ?       Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with the key constituents of the program (Principals, teachers, city leaders, community members, donors and board members as needed) ?       Serve as program expert with external stakeholders ?       Expand influence in community   WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: ?       Strong alignment with the Rehearsal for Life mission, vision and values ?       Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion ?       Proven track record as effective manager of creative youth development program ?       5+ years experience directing/coaching teaching artists ?       3+ years of service as a teaching artist in a school /youth organization setting ?       3+ years working in an ensemble and experience with improv ?       Expertise in applied theatre, social and emotional learning, and creative youth development ?       Proven ability to influence and motivate others, with a keen understanding of how to impact individual and group mindset, knowledge and skills ?       Excellent oral and written communication skills with a sophisticated understanding of how to convey complex topics to a variety of audiences ?       Excellent time management, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities ?       Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required; relevant advanced degree preferred Interested applicants should email cover letter and resume to Lisa McColgan, Office Administrator, at
