Position Title: Museum Educator Reports To: Education Programs Manager Status: Time-based independent contractor position Background The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a contemporary art museum, founded in 1971 to serve the culturally diverse populations of the Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. The Museum has a longstanding commitment to increasing and stimulating audience participation in the visual arts through its permanent collection, special exhibitions, public and education programs. It introduces visitors to the dynamic and challenging voices that shape the contemporary arts field of both today and tomorrow. The Museum is a member of the Cultural Institutions Group of the City of New York. The Bronx Museum's Education Department focuses on arts programs which empower students to express themselves, develop deep and career-enhancing skills, and see themselves as agents of change in their immediate communities and the world. We envision and work toward the museum as a more equitable space where marginalized voices, particularly those of youth, can be heard. Description The Bronx Museum of the Arts is looking for an experienced arts educator to co-lead an intensive teen council program. Created in 2005, the Bronx Museum Teen Council offers opportunities for young people to engage deeply with contemporary art and the museum space. In this paid, intensive after-school program, a group of 12 teens express and discuss ideas and create art relating to issues affecting young people today. The educator will co-lead 60 sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 from October through June (Teen Council does not meet during school breaks). Teens produce video interviews, a zine on a particular topic, and various other art projects, and curate an exhibit of teen artwork shown at the Museum. Responsibilities Collaborate with another educator and with Education staff on a 60-session curriculum for teen participants Co-lead 60 sessions largely at the museum, with several field trips to other museums and galleries; teach relevant skills and facilitate teen projects Attend paid meetings and exhibit walk-throughs Assist in documentation and program evaluation Qualifications Experience working as an educator for teens; experience as museum educator preferred Experience developing sequential curricula BA, BFA, or equivalent experience Deep knowledge of contemporary art and museums Self-identification as an artist, with a personal creative practice, preferred Excellent communication and collaboration skills Ability to multitask and problem solve Basic MS Office and Google Suite skills Video production experience strongly preferred Adobe Suite skills strongly preferred Spanish language skills preferred Commitment to the values and mission of the Bronx Museum Pay Rate and Classification This position is paid $150/session plus $20/hr for planning, editing, and meeting attendance. It is a time-based independent contractor position from late September 2019 through June 2020. #LI-DNI
